T#041 THE SABBATH DAY

THE SABBATH DAY

Genesis 2:1-3   =    “Thus the heavens and the earth were completed, and all their hosts. And by the seventh day, GOD completed HIS work which HE had done; and HE rested on the seventh day from all HIS work which HE had done. Then GOD blessed the seventh day and sanctified it, because in it HE rested from all HIS work which GOD had created and made.

Mark 2:27        =    “And JESUS was saying to them, ‘The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for The Sabbath.’ ”

(THE REST and
THE DAY)

  • were established to benefit man
  • and not for man to be obligated to observe
  • just because it was established
  • as JESUS clearly declared here!

Matthew 5:17-19   =    “Do not think that I came to abolish The Law or The Prophets; I did not come to abolish, but to fulfill. For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass away from The Law, until all is accomplished. Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and so teaches others, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
  • JESUS, after spending a lifetime of keeping The Law
  • --- in HIS last few minutes alive hanging on the cross
  • confirmed that as of that specific time

HE had already
accomplished all
(>>John 19:28-30)

  • and Paul reiterated this in >>Colossians 2:14!

THE old SABBATH DAY

  • is not any more to be reckoned with
  • after the resurrection of THE CHRIST
  • (>>Colossians 2:16-17)
  • in this end-times.

>>Matthew 28:1-6,
>>Mark 16:1-6,
>>Luke 24:1-7,
and >>John 20:1-9

  • all record
  • the rising from the dead of JESUS
  • on the first day of the week
  • a day after THE Jewish-Nation's SABBATH.

Also, not to be left
unnoticed is that:

  • the disciples after that resurrection day met regularly on the first day of each week
  • (>>Acts 20:7, >>1st Corinthians 16:2)
  • the day of the week they have referred to thereafter as THE LORD's DAY
  • instead of on THE Jewish-Nation's SABBATH
  • or THE seventh DAY.
  • No wonder, Paul admonished the Christians in Colossae
  • not to get themselves bothered with what others say
  • particularly about among others, “a Sabbath day”
  • as recorded in >>Colossians 2:16-17
  • because THE Jewish-Nation's SABBATH DAY
  • is not itself the essence

but it was

  • the rest from their six-day labors
  • and their sanctifying a day
  • as they set it apart from all the rest of their days in the week
  • that is the substance itself
  • coming from THE CHRIST.

IN FACT

  • nowhere more clearly as THE LAW is GOD’s strict requirement
  • for THE JEWS (as one-nation then)
  • observe THE SABBATH DAY
  • (whole day, not just a portion of the day) than in
  • >>Exodus 16:16-30, >>20:8, >>31:13-17, >>Isaiah 56:2, 6
  • BUT NOT EXCLUSIVE JUST FOR THEM

as in explicit words
the non-Jews who joined
themselves to THE LORD

in preserving justice and
doing righteousness
were considered
blessed by THE LORD
in >>Nehemiah 13:15-18.

YET

just as clear is GOD’s
EMPHASIS ON
THE SUBSTANCE

  • rather than the mere observance or ritual
  • for the sake of observing the law
  • is that shown as we read beyond >>verse 18
  • where in >>verse 19
  • GOD through Nehemiah stationed some of his servants
  • at the gates of Jerusalem
  • and therefore worked and
  • was not able to observe sabbath that day

as many interpret it just so

  • others are kept from profaning
  • THAT one & the same SABBATH DAY

In keeping with all of the above:

1.     WE are to rest a whole day on THE LORD’s DAY
  • from our regular day-to-day labors of six days in a week
  • not even to engage in humanly legitimate pursuits
  • that THE FAITH
  • should not rest in the wisdom of men
  • but on THE POWER of GOD to SALVATION
  • >>Romans 1:16
  • according to >>1st Corinthians 2:5.

2.     WE are on this particular whole day
  • not to do just any activity we do not do in the six days
  • but whatever
  • only they should be such kinds as according
  • to >>Isaiah 58:13-14.

3.     WE are to spend the whole day attending gatherings of GOD’s people
  • wherever scattered
  • (that is why we are commanded "Go, preach!" --- not COME & HEAR!)
  • in and out to find pasture (>>John 10:9)
  • among others
  • according to >>Acts 20:7, >>1st Corinthians 16:2, >>Ephesians 5:15-21, and >>Hebrews 10:25.
  • (Please endeavor to find time to refer to >>>T#s 010, 011, 012, 013, 014, 015, 016, 043 also!)

That even in our 6-days of
worldly affairs

  • we set portions of our time on our allocated hour or day
  • to be able to do those which we on our own evaluation
  • find important to accomplish in a given week
  • THE LORD our CREATOR and REDEEMER has set apart
  • in clear and unequivocal terms
  • a day for HIMSELF binding all men in all ages
  • one day in seven, for A SABBATH to be kept holy unto HIM

which from
the world began
to the day preceding
THE RESURRECTION of
THE CHRIST

  • was THE Last DAY of the Week

and from
THE RESURRECTION
of THE CHRIST
to the end of time

  • is now THE First DAY of the Week we now call THE LORD’s DAY.

THE 7th DAY SABBATH
was to commemorate
GOD’s REST DAY
for HIS creation work

  • that has since fallen

THE 1st DAY SABBATH
is to commemorate
THE CHRIST’s redemptive work

  • for the new creation, the redeemed, the forgiven of their sinnings, the amnestied, the overcomers
